The scandal was uncovered by German Christian Democrat MEP, Manfred Weber. Yesterday, during the vote by MEPs convened for a plenary parliamentary session in Strasbourg, he observed that Marine Le Pen voted even though she was absent. He made a complaint.
The verdict was given this morning. Yes, Marine Le Pen really did vote without being there. It was the member who sits next to her, with whom she had left her voting card, who voted for her on four occasions, in flagrant contravention of parliamentary rules which stipulate, in Rules 166 and 167, that MEPs votes must be made in person and that no one may vote for another in their absence.
Amid the clamour of members, Marine Le Pen put it down to the malfeasance of her colleague, to disbelief of the floor. She even threatened to make a complaint against Manfred Weber.
He replied that he was fully aware that she did not like democracy, but that was no reason to make a mockery of it, reminding members that their mandate had been given to them by voters and it was not be delegated to another. He also emphasised that Madame Le Pen’s trickery is considered a crime in some European countries. »You will always be tainted by this scandal«, he concluded.
