The Central Secretariat of the Communist Party of India announces with deep grief the passing away of Comrade Prabodh Panda, a member of the National Executive Committee, Secretary of West Bengal State Council and a former member of Lok Sabha.
Born in a peasant family in Purva Medinipur (WB) on February 7, 1946 Comrade Prabodh Panda joined the public life at an early age by becoming an activist of student movement. He graduated from Dantan Bhattar College. Later he joined farmers struggle and became member of the Communist Party of India in mid-sixties. He was secretary of the district council of CPI in Medinipur for a long time.
He was elected to 13th Lok Sabha for the first time in a bye-election in 2001 due to the death of Comrade Geeta Mukherjee. He was elected to the 14th and 15th Lok consequently in 2004 and 2009. As a Lok Sabha member he played an important role in focussing the peasants’ problems and contributed immensely in formulating the policies on water conservation and management as convenor of the parliamentary forum on the subject.
Comrade Prabodh Panda was a member of the CPI national council since a long time. He was elected secretary of the WB state council of the CPI in 2014. Since then he was also a member of the National Executive of the party. In December 2017, he was re-elected the secretary of WB state council.
Comrade Prabodh Panda was also national president of the All India Kisan Sabha.
The Central Secretariat of the CPI pays its most respectful homage to the memory of Comrade Prabodh and heartfelt condolences to the family (wife and the only son) and the party members in West Bengal.
CPI general secretary S. Sudhakar Reddy who is currently in Hyderabad has issued the following condolence message:
It is shocking sad news to hear the sudden death of Com. Prabodh Panda, Secretary, West Bengal State council of CPI, in the early hours of this morning. HE was a Member of Parliament twice from Medinipur and played an effective role in the house, voicing the downtrodden sections of the society. He was the Hon. President of All India Anganwadi Workers Union and raised their problems successfully in the Parliament. He is the president of All India Kisan Sabha for more than a decade and very recently reelected as the Secretary of the State council. He is the National Executive Member of the CPI. We were colleagues in Parliament and Party. He was an honest dedicated comrade. His death is big loss to the Communist party of India.
On behalf of National Council of CPI, I pay my homage and send deep condolences to his wife son and colleagues of the Party.
