On September 2, in the Donetsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after A.B. Solovyanenko, the farewell ceremony with the Head of the DPR Alexander Zakharchenko took place.

Over 200 thousand inhabitants of the Donetsk People’s Republic came to honour the memory of the fallen. Among them there were Acting Head of the DPR Dmitry Trapeznikov, Chairman of the DPR People’s Council Denis Pushilin, deputies of the DPR People’s Council, Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the DPR Alexander Timofeyev, representatives of the ministries and departments of the Republic. As part of the delegation from the Russian Federation, the Head of the Republic of Crimea Sergey Aksyonov, deputies of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Andrey Kozenko, Natalia Poklonskaya and Kazbek Taisayev, members of the Federation Council Olga Kovitidi and Sergey Tsekov attended the memorial service. Members of delegations from the Republic of South Ossetia, led by President Anatoly Bibilov, the Republic of Abkhazia, led by Deputy Prime Minister Astamur Ketsba and LPR representatives led by Acting Head of the Republic Leonid Pasechnik, as well as a number of Russian politicians, were also present.

Before the beginning of the mourning ceremony, representatives of the DPR government together with representatives of delegations from the Russian Federation, the Lugansk People’s Republic, the Republic of Abkhazia and the Republic of South Ossetia visited the place of death of the DPR Head.

The death of Alexander Zakharchenko is a huge tragedy for the entire Donbass, said the Speaker of the DPR Parliament.

“The Donbass has lost a truly national leader, the man who was followed, who led the way. Here we can only talk about yet another act of aggression by Ukraine. This is also connected with the agenda that is currently developing in geopolitics. You cannot call sane what Ukraine does, it’s not an attempt to peacefully resolve the conflict. It cannot be said that Ukraine, its current power, has something humane left. But we will not reconcile and will continue to fight,” Denis Pushilin stressed.

The Speaker of the DPR Parliament and foreign guests took part in the prayer for the repose of the soul of Alexander Zakharchenko in the Holy Transfiguration Cathedral of the city of Donetsk. At the conclusion of the prayer, President of the Republic of South Ossetia Anatoly Bibilov called the death of the people’s leader a great tragedy, which, in his opinion, cannot be fully acknowledged.

“This is a mourning event not only for the people of the Donetsk People’s Republic, but for all normal people, for all those who know what he fought for, for those people who realize what is going on at all.

We’ve just been to the temple, and lit candles for the repose. This is a great tragedy, and, unfortunately, we may not fully acknowledge what we lost, whom we lost, what we were deprived of… But anyway, life goes on, and I am sure that the DPR people will withstand the problems that befell them. And I am sure that I will come to the grave of Alexander Vladimirovich on the day of recognition of the Donetsk People’s Republic. I am sure of this,” Anatoly Bibilov said.

However, according to Denis Pushilin, at present the world community continues to demonstrate the policy of double standards, and this is manifested, in particular, in relation to the death of the DPR Head.

“Unfortunately, the world community turns a blind eye to this, simply pretending that nothing happened. A person whose signature is under the Minsk agreements was killed. In a civilized society, there would be a reaction. There must be one. If only there were no double standards in the world,” the DPR envoy to the Contact Group in Minsk noted.

At the end of the farewell ceremony, a many thousands strong funeral procession were marched along Artema Street from the building of the Donetsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre to the building of the Administration of the DPR Head, where the late leader of the Donbass worked.

The body of Alexander Zakharchenko was buried with military honours in the city cemetery “Donetsk Sea.” On the territory of the same cemetery, Heroes of the DPR Arsen Pavlov (call sign Motorola) and Mikhail Tolstykh (call sign Givi), who also died as a result of the terrorist attacks, are buried.

Alexander Vladimirovich Zakharchenko was born on June 26, 1976, in Donetsk. Active participant in the events of the Russian spring of 2014. After the referendum on independence of the DPR, he became the military commandant of Donetsk, and later – the Deputy MIA Minister of the Republic.

From August 2014 he had been occupying the post of Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Donetsk People’s Republic. He won the election of the DPR Head, which took place on November 2 of the same year.
