The World Federation of Trade Unions, expresses its sadness for the loss of the great militant, Giorgos Gkotsi, who died in Sidney, Australia, and devoted his entire life to trade union and social struggles.
He has been a docker for many years, a member of the TUI Transport of WFTU, he has been leading the strikes in the Australian ports for more than half a century. From 2006 until his death, he was the Coordinator of the WFTU in Australia, and an internationalist fighter for the benefits of the international working class. In 2015 he held an important event in Australia for the 70th Anniversary of the founding of WFTU and was the central speaker. All these years he supported steadily and by by means the WFTU.
In Australia, where the May 1st is a working day like all the other days of the year …. with the tolerance of reformist trade union leaders, the immigrant fighter Giorgos Gkotsis succeeded in establishing a Committee for its militant celebration and elected its General Coordinator by organizing every year the celebration of May Day in Sidney.
For all this action, he has earned the respect and appreciation of all of us.
On behalf of the family of the WFTU, which represents 97 million members in 130 countries of the five continents, we express our condolences to his relatives.
