The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India issued the following statement:
The Communist Party of India deplores the continuing violence in West Bengal, during the elections. While both BJP and TMC are to be held responsible for the situation, they try to blame each other.
The CPI strongly condemns the vandalism which took place yesterday in Kolkata in BJP President Amit Shah’s road show leading to the demolition of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar’s statue. It is a big irony that Prime Minister instead of expressing apology for the vandalism and demolition of Vidyasagar’s statue, has declared to install a grand statue of Vidyasagar later.
The party is of the view that the Election Commission of India has failed to act as an independent constitutional body. Its creditability stands thoroughly affected for not acting neutrally and for showing favour to Prime Minister and BJP President Amit Shah. Time has come that Parliament should consider to establish an appropriate mechanism to choose and appoint the Election Commissioners.
