Moscow has noted with great concern the persisting tensions when it comes to the Palestinian-Israeli settlement, which became hostage to Washington’s one-sided approaches as confirmed once again by the recent discussion of the Middle East agenda by the UN Security Council. On July 25, the United States blocked the approval of a draft press statement, proposed by Kuwait, Indonesia and South Africa, condemning the demolition of Palestinian houses in East Jerusalem. Under international law, Israel’s actions in the occupied Palestinian territories were illegal.

Americans’ destructive stand that was contrary to the approaches of the overwhelming majority of the international community members once again demonstrated the course for undermining the internationally recognised legal framework for the Middle East settlement that was enshrined in the UNSC resolutions supported, among others, by Washington. In the same context, we noted a speech by US Special Representative for International Negotiations Jason Greenblatt at the UNSC meeting on July 24 in which Mr Greenblatt alluded to the futility of efforts to reach a consensus on the Middle East settlement at the UN and the worthlessness of respective UNSC resolutions.

On our part, we firmly believe that the unilateral actions practiced by the Americans while ignoring international law will not produce results. They are detrimental to the prospects of a just and lasting settlement of the long-standing Palestinian-Israeli problem.
