Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks during talks with Executive Vice President of Venezuela Delcy Rodriguez, Moscow, August 21, 2019

Madam Vice President,

We are very happy to welcome you and your delegation to Moscow and to be able to meet at the Foreign Ministry.

We maintain very close contacts. Since the start of 2019, I have met with my counterpart Jorge Arreaza; Vladimir Padrino Lopez, Defence Minister, and your colleague, Tareck El Aissami, Vice President in charge of economic issues, have also visited us here.

The April 2019 meeting of the Russian-Venezuelan High-Level Intergovernmental Commission, which focused on key matters of our cooperation, proved very useful.

During your current visit, you have already had a useful meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on your country successfully hosting a meeting of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement last month. Its participants reaffirmed their solidarity with the people and government of Venezuela in defending the norms and principles of international law, first of all those formalised by the UN Charter. We have always been and remain committed to these principles, and will always join you in defending the right of every nation to independently choose its own development paths and to emphatically counter any illegitimate unilateral methods of blackmail and pressure.

Today, we will discuss our cooperation in international affairs, including at the UN and other multilateral venues, in greater detail.

I am very happy to see you. Welcome once again.
