Moscow has taken note of the Arab countries’ highly negative reaction to the statement made by Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu regarding his intention to extend Israeli sovereignty to the Jordan Valley.

We share concerns over these Israeli plans, the implementation of which can lead to a dramatic escalation of tensions in the region and undermine hopes for a long awaited peace between Israel and its Arab neighbours.

At the same time, we confirm our consistent and unchanged position on the need for a comprehensive political settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict based on the two-state solution to be implemented within the 1967 borders. The only reliable path to settling all the existing differences lies through direct talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians within the framework of international law, including UN Security Council resolutions, the Madrid Principles and the Arab Peace Initiative.
