Press release by Heike Hänsel
“While coronavirus infection numbers are skyrocketing in the United States, the US government is trying to divert attention by placing a bounty on Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, an unprecedented act worldwide. This absurd wild west policy must be condemned by the Federal Government,” explains Heike Hänsel, deputy chairwoman of the DIE LINKE Parliamentary Group.
Hansel continues: “Venezuela now urgently needs international support to fight the coronavirus pandemic. This was also expressed by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet’s appeal to lift economic sanctions against Venezuela that violate international law. The Federal Government must include this unprecedented aggressive act by the US government against Venezuela in the UN Security Council’s agenda. The allegations that the Venezuelan head of government is the leader of a drug cartel called the ‘Cartel of the Suns’ is just as credible as the ‘evidence’ for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq in 2003.
Data collected by the very same US government show that the main drug transportation routes pass through Central America and not through Venezuela. Colombia, the closest US ally, is still considered the country of ‘narcopolitics’, with politicians who are deeply involved in drug trafficking such as former President Alvaro Uribe, a confidante of President-in-Office Ivan Duque. And the U.S.-backed, self-appointed Venezuelan interim president, Juan Guaidó, was seen last year in photos with two leaders of the Colombian drug cartel Los Rastrojos who organized his illegal trip to Colombia.
The Federal Government must campaign for an end to EU economic sanctions against Venezuela in order to stabilize the health system and support new initiatives for cooperation between government and opposition in Venezuela in the face of the corona pandemic. ”
