The World Federation of Trade Unions on behalf of its 105 million workers in 130 countries of the 5 continents expresses its international solidarity and support with the 80000 workers of Marks & Spencer who are facing the condemnable decision of the company to cut 7000 jobs over the next three months.
Marks & Spencer is multinational retailer which was founded in 1884 and now operates in 62 international markets selling clothes, food and household goods. The multinational despite the fact that is already recording tens of millions of net income in 2020, decided to condemn thousands of workers in unemployment and is oriented to create a “more flexible” working environment which means more uncertainty, intensification of work and exploitation of the remained workers.
The company’s statement that a large portion of the reductions will be covered by voluntary departures and early retirement, is just a smokescreen aims to disorient and beautify its anti-labour practices. The international class oriented trade union demand the immediate withdrawal of the decision for 7000 layoffs and strongly condemns the generalized attempt of multinationals to shift the burden if the pandemic crisis to the workers.
