Instead of hiding the Justice Minister should provide answers

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou on the Justice Minister’s abuse of power

The Minister of Justice E.Yioliti is charged with an unprecedented behavior of abuse of power towards a citizen. If she doesn’t realize it, then the President of the Republic – who appointed her – must point this out to her so that she will take on the political responsibility.

The Minister of Justice reported a satirical social media account to the Police, despite the fact that she knew, or should have known, that the matter concerns civil and not criminal justice. The Police, with excessive zeal and actions of dubious legality, subsequently broke into a citizen’s home and proceeded to seize computers.

The Minister of Justice is hiding and keeping silent, as the government is doing too, hoping that over time the issue will be forgotten. AKEL, however, will not let the issue be forgotten, because this is an issue that directly concerns the individual rights of citizens, the rule of law and the quality of democracy in our country.

It is an issue that reflects the government’s arrogance and authoritarianism in general. This is a government with a serious intolerance of criticism and the opposite point of view.

That is precisely why AKEL has registered the issue for debate in Parliament.
