WFTU condolences statement on the earthquake in Indonesia

The World Federation of Trade Unions, on behalf of its 105 million workers from 130 countries, expresses its sincere condolences to the working class of Indonesia that once again mourns tens of dead people due to earthquake.

The 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the island of Sulawesi on Friday morning was one of at least 26 aftershocks followed an earlier, smaller earthquake. According to the so far reports at least 34 people lost their lives, hundreds are injured and thousands are displaced. Among the dead, there are at least 8 people who were in the five-storey Mitra Manakarra Hospital in Mamuju that partially collapsed.

Our thoughts are with the families and relatives of the victims. We condemn the lack of adequate protective measures, in a country that is frequently struck by severe earthquakes. The international class-oriented trade union movement demands the immediate ensuring of safe accommodation and healthcare for all the affected people. We also demand full compensation for the damages. We join our voice with the trade unions of Indonesia that firmly struggle for adequate protection measures in all aspect of the people’s lives.
