WFTU condemnation statement on the repression of trade union rights in Sri Lanka

World Federation of Trade Unions

The World Federation of Trade Unions, on behalf of its 105 million members from 133 countries of the 5 continents, strongly condemns the repression of the recent demonstrations against privatization of education and insufficient supply of fertilizer for crops and plantations. We denounce the illegal arrest of tens of trade unionists and militants who struggle for the rights and interest of workers, peasants and students.  The international class oriented trade union movement supports the just demands of the trade union movement in Sri Lanka. We demand immediate and unconditional release of all arrested protesters and the satisfaction of their requests.  The violation of democratic and trade union rights will never be tolerated.
