1 September 2021 The South African Communist Party (SACP) conveys its heartfelt condolences to the family of Comrade Kebby Maphatsoe. Comrade Kebby died on Tuesday 31 August 2021. The SACP also sends deepest condolences to the African National Congress (ANC) and the entire liberation movement for the loss. From a young age, Comrade Kebby volunteered in the fight against the apartheid regime. Consequently, he was forced into exile and became a member of the Umkhonto WeSizwe (MK) where he received military and other training. Upon return to South Africa, Comrade Kebby continued to make his contribution in the country’s development. He served the country as deputy minister of defence and military veterans between 2014 and 2019. He was also a member of the ANC National Executive Committee up to 2017, serving since the 53rd National Conference in 2012. Comrade Kebby’s death comes at a time when the Alliance is engaged in uniting MK veterans, to build one united association of MK veterans. The unity of MK veterans is also crucial in taking care of the families of those veterans who have since deceased, while also raising the consciousness of the South African working class about the history of both the country and the African continent. The SACP reiterates its call for the unity of the liberation movement, to push it onward to the second radical phase of the national democratic revolution.
