Statement on the implementation of “step aside” for candidates facing criminal charges

South African Communist Party

22 September 2021 The SACP in the Western Cape welcomes the decision of the African National Congress in the province for applying the step aside rule on candidates who are facing criminal charges. This has affected at least three candidates who have been removed from the election list for 1 November 2021 elections. The SACP applauds the leadership of the ANC for the decision which is consistent with the national guidelines of the movement to protect the image and integrity of the ANC. It has always been our consistent view that the ANC can only self-correct if there is political will to implement rules of the movement fairly without fear or favour. The SACP will be fully behind the candidates of the ANC for the upcoming local government elections and will not support any dubious and corrupt candidates.
