ITUC Demands Release of Jailed Union Official

The ITUC has denounced the imprisonment of Algerian trade union official Kaddour Chouicha, a member of the Executive of trade union centre CGATA, and called for repression against CGATA to end. Chouicha was detained on 9 December when he attended a police station to recover his mobile phone which police had taken from him at a previous demonstration. Within a few hours, he was summarily sentenced to a one-year prison sentence. Previously, on 3 December, CGATA offices were closed by the authorities.

Communists call for independent Working Class Stance in elections

In Algeria’s presidential elections, originally scheduled for April 18, but now postponed to a date yet to be set, the Partie Algérien pour la Démocratie et le Socialisme (Algerian Party for Democracy and Socialism, or PADS), which is the country’s communist party, is calling for the working class to reject not only the incumbent president, Abdelazziz Bouteflika, but any candidate that represents the same policies as the incapacitated 80 year old Bouteflika, who has been president since 1999.

Algerian Party for Democracy and Socialism: For the adoption of a new pro-people regime, socialism

 On February 22, Algerians took to the street for protesting President Bouteflika’s intention for going for another mandate despite the political crisis of the regime, high levels of corruption and his own health problems. On March 11, Bouteflika announced that he will not run for the presidency in the upcoming elections that he arbitrarily postponed. As manifestations continue with enthusiasm, the President’s step back does not seem to ease the people’s rage against the regime.

WFTU supports the struggle of the resident doctors

The resident doctors in Algeria have decided to continue their strike and protests that started in November 2017, while their demands include the suspension of mandatory civil service for Algerian doctors, exemption from compulsory military service, better pedagogical training, decent residence for doctors, salary increase and maternity leaves for women resident doctors during the four year period of their service.

The World Federation of Trade Unions, representing more than 92 million workers in 126 countries all over the world, extends its internationalist solidarity with the trade union SNATEGS and with the workers of Sonelgaz in Algeria. The WFTU denounces the Sonelgaz administration that violates the constitutional and international laws and tries to dissolve the trade union action and the workers’ right to strike. Moreover we condemn the effort of terrorization of the protesting workers and the penalization of their struggles.
