KHMU urges government to stand firm on plans to strengthen Korea’s public medical service

UNI affiliate, the Korea Health & Medical Workers’ Union (KHMU), urged the Korean government to stand firm and not renege on its plans to strengthen the country’s public medical service. The union held a press conference last week in front of the National Assembly building to denounce the government’s caving to the demands of the medical doctor associations to scrap the health reform plans announced earlier in July.

International solidarity unlocks key agreement for South Korean workers

After nine months of organising, workers at UPS in South Korea have won their first ever collective bargaining agreement at the company. As part of the agreement, the American logistics giant has agreed to end forced unpaid overtime and improve pay standards. The workers union, the Korean Public Service and Transport Workers’ Union (KPTU), says that negotiations with UPS had stalled until unions in the UK and USA got involved.

According to the South Korean Ministry of Health, Welfare and Disease Control, at least 29 people have died due to heatstroke in South Korea. The WFTU expresses its sincere condolences to the families and friends of the of the dead people. Unfortunately, whether it is a heat-wave or any other natural disaster, always the workers, the ordinary people, are unprotected, suffer and pay with their lives the lack of safety measures.
