Government blocks trade union congress again

The ITUC has called on the president of Afghanistan, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, to end the government’s obstruction of legitimate trade union work in the country and allow the ITUC-affiliated national trade union centre NUAWE to hold its congress. NUAWE, the National Union of Afghanistan Workers and Employees, was due to hold its congress on 5 September but was ordered by the Justice Ministry to call it off. An earlier attempt by the organisation to hold its congress in February also met with a government ban.

The World Federation of Trade Unions on behalf of its more than 100 million workers in 132 countries expresses its sincere condolence to the relatives and colleagues of the 20 coal miners who lost their lives working to earn a livelihood for themselves and their families. According to official information, the miners were trapped in a coal mine that collapsed due to a gas explosion on Tuesday in Afghanistan’s northern Samangan province.

At least 30 Afghans lost their lives and 7 get injured due to the collapse of a tunnel of a gold mine in northern Afghanistan. During the collapse, 50 people were in the mine. Poverty, hunger, and impoverishment force the people to recourse to dangerous, for their lives, works in order to survive. The World Federation of Trade Unions representing more than 95 million workers in 130 countries, expresses its internationalist solidarity to the people of Afghanistan. The continuing drought in Afghanistan is worsened due to the lack of precipitation in late 2017 and 2018.   The food insecurity and water scarcity are increasing the already high malnutrition rates among children.  The affected children are estimated to be more than 500.000 and more than 3 million people living in conditions of food insecurity.

UNAMA condemns killing of at least 15 civilians in airstrike

An airstrike targeting Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), also known as Daesh, was conducted yesterday in the eastern district of Achin. In the process civilian casualties were incurred. US Army bombs hospital in Kunduz

In Kunduz, at 2:10 am local time on Saturday October 3, the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières’ (MSF) Trauma center was hit several times during sustained bombing and was very badly damaged. The organization confirms so far the death of nine MSF staff members during the bombing. Latest casualty figures report 37 people seriously wounded, of whom 19 are MSF staff.
